What you need:

  • Burger buns (bread)
  • Minced meat
  • Onion (sliced and diced)
  • Egg
  • Salt, pepper, oil, butter
  • Cheese
  • Sauce (mayo, ketchup, cocktail, or your homemade leftover sauce)

What you'll do

Warm up a cast iron skillet. Throw in a piece of butter, it should melt rapidly. Cut the buns in two and put them face down (inside down) on the cast iron skillet so they toast nicely with the butter until they are browned.

In the meantime, in a bowl mix the minced meat, the finely diced onion and the egg using your hands. Season them! You should make tennis ball-shaped patties and let them rest in the fridge for a while - but the fridge part is optional.

In the same cast iron skillet you just browned the bread in, press down the patties using a spatula until they get the classic hamburger shape. 5 minutes per side should do. Resist the tentation to flip them or move them!

Once one side is done, put a slice of cheese (cheddar, young gouda, ...) on the patty in the pan, so that the heat has it slowly melt on top of the cooking patty.

Finally, spread the inside of the buns with the sauce you chose, put in the burgers and cheese and any other topping you want (tomatoes, pickles, salad, ...)
